Cananga oil is derived from the flowers of the cananga tree, which is native to parts of Asia, including Indonesia. It's a member of the Custard Apple family, Annonaceae. Generally, most of the members of this plant family grow up to an average height of 12 metres. The flower is drooping, long-stalked, with six narrow, greenish-yellow petals and yields the highly fragrant essential oil.
The flowers are hydro distilled for their sweet, floral and slightly woody characteristics.
In aromatherapy, this oil is used as an antidepressant and as a sedative. It is also considered to be an aphrodisiac and is believed to stimulate the circulatory system.
Cananga is of the same family as ylang ylang, which can be found in areas such as Madagascar. Cananga is more frequently used when the availability of ylang ylang is limited and / or prices are higher.
Cananga is used in the fragrance industry and is grown only in the East Java region of Blitar and its surrounding areas.
Adverse weather conditions due to heavy rain and strong winds in the cultivation region have badly affected the harvest in December 2017 and January 2018. However, market demand continues to remain steady.
